Eating Clean with Clean Eating Alice
After years of unhealthy eating and little exercise, Alice Liveing decided to overhaul her lifestyle for the better. She’s now a personal trainer and best selling author with over half a million followers on Instagram. We sat down with her to find out more about her approach to nutrition and exercise.
So what did she do?
She started by learning the basics of weight training by reading, listening to podcasts and watching YouTube. It’s really become her passion – “It’s my favourite thing to do, I’ve never felt so empowered as I do when I weight train”.
People often decide to overhaul either their diet or their activity level. Can you put one above the other or do they go hand-in-hand?
According to Alice they “go hand-in-hand, absolutely”. Most people focus on trying to eat healthier or get a little more exercise each week but Alice says “you can achieve a lot with diet” but maintains that “the exercise gave her the confidence to feel good about her body”. So there’s no point getting more exercise in if you stick with your unhealthy snacks and fried foods.
What’s her view on supplements?
I was very interested to hear her thoughts on this topical issue but refreshingly she thinks “they’re there to supplement your diet”. She does understand why some people opt for protein shakes – “they have their place” but she doesn’t rely on them. Instead she gets “everything she needs from food” but will take a whey protein shake as and when she needs to.
What are her go-to snacks for when she’s out and about?
Alice munches on “almond or cashew butter with slices of apple”. She also loves rice or corn cakes with smoked salmon & Greek yogurt with nuts & seeds – “last night I had some Greek yogurt with pomegranate & pumpkin seeds”.
Her favourite meal?
It doesn’t take a genius to work that one out. One look at her social media feed and you’ll quickly see she is a huge fan of eggs for breakfast. We love this veggie omelette topped with our Chilli Picante ProMix!!!
What’s your approach when it comes to food?
Telling it straight Alice points out “you can’t cheat every day and expect to see results” but she says “equally you can’t restrict somebody to the point where they develop an unhealthy relationship with food.” I agree, it’s all about balance and eating a wide variety of food. Alice takes “one day off plan each week”.
She feels good when she eats natural, whole foods Monday to Saturday but she looks forward to Sunday when she’ll “indulge” (she loves ice cream), “it’s important to know that it’s ok to eat these type of things”. What might work for one person might not work for another.
When she started out, did she have any idea that this would become her life?
“Absolutely not” – she maintains that it has come from the support she received from all the people who have ‘bought’ into her journey. She doesn’t take it lightly though – “I do make sure to research and learn” as she is “very aware of her responsibility and doesn’t want to mislead anyone”. It’s no wonder she has amassed so many loyal followers, her posts are always upbeat, colourful & inspiring – “I try to keep things positive”.
