Almond Butter Can Help You Lose Weight
Eating fat when you are trying to lose fat does sound counterproductive, but that’s not the case. When enjoyed in moderate amounts, research shows that healthy fats such as those in almonds, peanuts, seeds and avocados can help you lose more weight than a low-fat diet.
Why? Well low-fat diets tend to be much higher in sugar. Take for example low-fat yogurts… since nearly all the fat is stripped from the yogurt, the manufacturers have to make up for the loss of flavour by dousing it with sugar. By snacking on sugar every day, you are more likely to pack on the pounds than if you focused on getting sugar free full-fat versions of food into your diet.
Healthy fats also promote a greater sense of satiety. After enjoying a piece of toast with almond butter, or a smoothie with a tablespoon of nut butter, you are going to be less likely to go for seconds, because the fat makes you feel full. If you snack on sugary, low-fat foods all day, your blood sugar rises and falls like a roller-coaster and you can become ravenous even after a large meal.
Still not convinced? Well, ask UFC’s Conor McGregor. When he’s trying to shed weight for a fight he snacks on a spoon of almond butter (or some nuts). Why? It’s a great way of taking the edge of your appetite and keeping you going until the next meal. (BTW – he really likes our nut butters!)
Not all fats are equal though. Too much saturated fat like those in butter, fatty cuts of meat, cream, biscuits, cakes and pastries can raise cholesterol. On the other hand, the unsaturated fats in almonds, peanuts seeds, avocados etc. can actually help lower cholesterol.
The healthy fats in almonds have been researched and proven to have a weight loss stimulating effect on the body. In fact, a study published in the International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders found that participants that followed a moderate-fat diet where extra fat was supplied by almonds lost more weight than the group that consumed a low-fat diet. The group that enjoyed almonds also had a 50% greater waistline reduction! (2)
Now you may be wondering how it’s possible that a higher fat diet actually contributed to a greater reduction in fat loss. Here’s the thing, almonds contain compounds that actually limit the amount of fat absorbed by the body.
As always, everything in moderation… and of course exercise is always a good thing. But if you’re working out hard and not achieving the results you want, maybe it’s time to take another look at how healthy fats can play a bigger role in your diet. To get started, add a spoonful of almond butter into your morning bowl of porridge, try making frozen nut butter bites, or blend some almond butter into your breakfast smoothie!
